"Whiteout"

Completed December 6, 2008

Let's walk, you and I,
and create a moment
that I can later change
into a song without sound.

Show me that my anger
lies in the snow beneath
our feet. Carry me over
the people who are buried

and can no longer hear
the crunching of my words.

Already the cold air
feels warmer, yet we
keep ourselves covered
with blankets and wool.

Today the snowflakes fall
sideways, unaware that
they are most interesting
on those days when they

seem to be falling up.
Let's watch, you and I,

as this distracting dance
fills the sky, because soon
the sunlight will begin
to make the ice too clear

and the snow too bright.
It sparkles now at our feet
as we look up at the
naked tree, no longer

unexpectedly beautiful
as it was yesterday.
